Or so it will seem to you, fair reader.
Trencher and I are very serious about one luxury in life: breakfast. "Breakfast? A 'luxury'? PARUMPH!", says you. "I do not consider it very luxurious to eat cereal whilst standing in my kitchen wearing my bathrobe, briefly looking up now and then to pretend I care what my husband's talking about." I know, I know.
But - I am not just talking about regular old breakfast. I mean the luxurious kind... the kind that takes place on one's day off, after sleeping in and taking as much time as you'd like to get out of bed, shower and get dressed. Then, when you finally arrive at your "breakfast" location (in time for normal people's lunch, natch), you sit, you converse, you drink too much coffee and eat too many calories. It's luxurious because it's rare, and we're big fans. You will probably see a lot of breakfast/brunch reviews in this blog because it is my current favorite meal to go out for. Most people do this on Sunday, and I am no exception. My 'Sunday' falls on Friday and I think Trench and I have done this type of lazy breakfast every Friday for the last 500 Fridays or so. (I recommend doing it every single day while on vacation.)
Now that I explained wayyy too much about my love of all things breakfast, allow me to dive into my review.
At the end of my last blog I promised that this review would be of The Griddle, and so it is. What I did not think through very well is that I have ordered only one thing off of their menu, so I may not be the best person to review their food. We've been to both locations (Durango/Warm Springs and Eastern/215) and have learned that they're run by different parts of the same family. All staff are friendly and helpful. (My favorite is a guy we saw a few times in a row at the D/WS location, and not just because he gave us free Red Velvet pancakes* once. Mostly because, upon seeing Trench in there with his roommate Mister Wayward instead of me, asked where Trench's "wife" was. Ha! I only had to pay him $10 to say that. Get those seeds planted, ladies.)
A. Ny. Way. As the name suggests, they specialize in pancakes, waffles, French toast, whatnot. You can order those items plain, or customize them with a bunch of different toppings. One of those toppings is peanut butter, and that is one of my all-time favorite foods. I imagined that they took the plain pancake and smeared peanut butter on it, but I was wrong. The D/WS location puts it in the batter, and it is soooo good. It tastes just like you'd expect it to: nutty, savory, fluffy, excellent. (Note: The E/215 location serves plain pancakes with a side of peanut butter, which I enjoyed just as much. Maybe more in some ways because I could put as much pb on each bite as I wanted to. Trench does not appreciate this and prefers the pb-in-batter situation. This was explained by the fact that the D/WS location has a bigger kitchen. I am unsure as to why a bigger kitchen is necessary to put pb in batter.) They also have all the usual accoutrements: eggs, sausage, bacon, the like, and they do them very well. I'm mostly in it for the pancakes. However, now that I have had said pancakes dozens of times, I am ready to try some of their sandwiches, salads, burgers and other lunch items. Perhaps I will review The Griddle again someday after I venture to that side of the menu a few times.
*Yes, on one visit Mr. Get This Broad Married Off highly recommended their Red Velvet pancake. However, Trench and I had neither the room nor the taste for said pancake, as we both feel that pancakes are sweet enough on their own and do not require additional sweetness. Mr. GTBMO insisted, and had the kitchen make us an entire order, complete with syrups, whipped cream, powdered sugar and WOW factor. The stack was red, it was bountiful and it was beautiful. We forced in a few bites because a) we are nothing if not polite and b) they were amazing. I still wouldn't order it as my breakfast because of the super sweet factor, but they were very delicious, like red velvet cake with whipped cream and raspberry syrup for zing! I definitely recommend them if you like dessert for breakfast!
